The Reitz Union Board Entertainment announced Friday morning that one performer for their Big Orange Festival is being canceled after UFPD took him away in handcuffs.
DJ Khaled, known for his avid jet skiing, was arrested after UFPD was shown his snapchat story that depicted the star giving life advice while riding on Lake Alice.
“Ride with me through the journey of more success,”
Khaled said in his story.
“They don’t want you doing donuts in the middle of campus.”
UFPD quickly sent out a UF Alert and rushed to the scene. They instructed the artist to stop doing donuts, but he insisted on doing more. UFPD is still not entirely sure where the jetski came from or how it was transported to the lake.
“Another one,”
Khaled said after completing a donut, but when finished with that one, he continued.
“Another one.”
After spotting an alligator, Khaled quickly fled to the side of the lake, noting to his snapchat followers that he “wasn’t about to get eaten,” when police finally detained him. Officer Rick Ross said the perp wouldn’t cooperate with law enforcement.
“I asked who he was,”
Ross said.
“He just kept shouting, ‘We da best.’ I hope he’s referring to his legal team.”
As DJ Khaled was carried away, sophomore Matt Phillips, who was watching from the shore along with 419 other curious students, could hear Khaled calling out to him.
“He said ‘They don’t want you to know your rights,’”
Phillips repeated.
“Then he said, ‘But more importantly, they don’t want you to know you’re right.’ I’m not sure if that made sense or applied here, but he sounds so convincing and knowledgeable, you know?”
RUB Entertainment is currently scrambling to find a replacement for Khaled, but a representative of the DJ relayed a message for him.
“I’ll find a way out, don’t replace me yet,”
Khaled recorded on his rep’s snapchat.
“Patience; major key.”
For now, Khaled rests in his cell, motivating himself to find a way to perform for UF.
