The Florida State University campus is set to be demolished following a crushing defeat in the Rose Bowl. The loss has left many students and faculty reeling, prompting the discussion for the complete destruction of campus. We asked the president of the university, John Thrasher, about the decision:
Well I took over this school solely for the football program. Now that it’s over, there’s not really any point to the rest of the campus.
This sentiment is one that appears to be shared by most students. Reports indicate that class attendance has dropped almost 80% this semester, and experts are citing the football program as the cause. The few students that still show up to class are visibly demoralized and usually end up wandering the campus with a blank expression. Granted, this is normal activity for most students, but recent events have worsened the problem. We asked one student, Rob Johnson, about his thoughts.
I don’t know what to do without the football program. Honestly it was the only thing I could brag about. Now what do we have? The Strip? The Circus?
Johnson then wandered off, clutching a Winston jersey tightly.
Reports indicate that no building is safe from the destruction plans. Landmarks are being destroyed all over campus, including all Greek life housing and even the 24 hour Denny’s. Displaced students are being offered temporary housing at the local Motel 6™ or at camp sites set up in the rubble of the dorms.
There has been some backlash in dismantling FSU’s highly successful circus program, with many of the performers/clowns stating that they will have nowhere to go to show their talents.
Other universities are calling the sudden destruction a “tragedy” and “a darn shame.” Many have pledged to help the uprooted students by helping them find community colleges in Gainesville, Orlando, and Tampa. With any luck, these students might be able to get their AA degree and transfer to one of the legitimate institutions in each area.
